Your Instructor

Andrew was born and raised in the coastal town of Corpus Christi, Texas and studied theater and art at the University of Texas in Austin.  Various artistic pursuits led to him becoming a Production Designer in Los Angeles where he cultivated an innate ability to compile and curate various elements into one cohesive visual expression. After a strong career in the film and print industry, Andrew found himself just as burned out as he was successful. It was then that he took his artistic abilities and channeled them into painting, studying at the Mission Renaissance Fine Art Academy in Pasadena California.
In both painting and in his teaching, Andrew finds meaning in the challenge to see beyond what is in front of him, to see all the colors that exist to make up a single object.  To find the softness and hardness, the light and the dark and how best to convey those on canvas.
Andrew firmly believes that given the right tools and skills, anyone can learn how to express themselves artistically.  He teaches the way the masters created, focusing on three simple concepts:  line, value and color.
Andrew founded the Fine Art Studio of San Antonio in 2021 and the Fine Art Studio of Asheville in early 2024. He teaches workshops around the country including The Bascom in Highlands, NC.

FAQs

I can’t draw a stick figure!

We get this a lot! Even better! We specialize in beginners and will have you drawing by the end of your first class.

What are classes like? Does the whole group work on the same thing?

Classes are like private teaching in a group setting. Andrew will work with you one-on-one, give you a skill and demonstration and as you work will move on to the next student then circle back to check your work. In the first set of classes you will choose your own props to create an interesting still life.

What about younger kids?

We recommend private art lessons for children under the age of 9, as we find that younger students benefit more from one-on-one instruction.

How soon can I get to painting?

Each student is different and there is no set amount of classes before you move on from drawing to a different medium. Our goal is to give you a strong foundation in technique in order to allow you to fly on your own as an artist.

Can I take just one class?

We offer all new students one free “trial” class. After that, classes are booked monthly - you choose a set class time for yourself from the eight times we offer and will attend classes weekly.

What if I can’t make it to a class? Do I lose it?

You can schedule a make up class! Please inform us 24 hours in advance to reschedule. No-shows are considered sessions attended, except in emergencies.
